OMG OMG OMG my sister and I are watching Strictly Come Dancing on BBC iPlayer (goddamn do I love Strictly, even though I want to shoot whatever cuntface in TPTB who decided it was fair and okay in any way to replace Arleen with Alesha, but whatevs) and we realise Katya Virshilas, one of the professional dancers, WAS FROM SPN! SHE WAS CASTIEL'S HOOKER IN 'FREE TO BE YOU AND ME'!!!!!!! OMFG. I recognised her from something, but it was my SISTER who realised who it was!! Amazing.

Also I totally got High School Musical in [info]j2_everafter. \o?

04:17 pm - PR: 6.12 - The Art of Fashion
So. I didn't do a recap last week because I thought Saturday was Friday and when I went to do it on Sunday instead, I discovered that I had lost the link to the place where I get my pictures. Fail! So I just said "Fuck it" and gave up. But I'm back now! Yay.

This week's challenge was the final one before Bryant Park. PRESSURE! The designers and their models go to the Getty Center and are told to find inspiration and make something. Very loose guidelines there. Which is good for them, since this is their last chance to really impress the judges and show who they are as designers.

The best moment of the whole show for me was when Tim did his walk-through and told Irina that hers was looking like roadkill. AWESOME.

I've written the outline for my paper, which is due Tuesday, which I intend to finish today! Because I am good. And I have other crap to work on tomorrow.

Should I buy more books? On the one hand, I know I'd read them. On the other hand, there is no shortage of books in my apartment. Plus I'm probably moving again in July, and the less I have to pack, the better. On the other hand, four little paperbacks will not take up much room. On the one hand, they're all available at Milwaukee's various libraries. On the other hand, they're used, so the cost of the books is probably equivalent to the cost of gas. Less, in fact, since I'd have to drive them back to the library.

*ponders*

Yeah, so this paper is still a 63-word heading and outline.

Ooh, but it looks like they're now keeping the library's coffee shop open on Sundays! Glory, glory, hallelujah.

ETA: Also, I'm all caught up on "Flash Forward" now. I quite like it, though I tend not to think about it when I'm not watching, so I doubt I'll get involved in the fandom, if there is one. The storyline continues to be interesting, the characters continue to not piss me off too much (though the kids, Charlie and Dylan, are kind of creepy) but the truth is, I'm totally mesmerized by the hotness that is John Cho. Pfft, who cares about Joseph Fiennes? (I do, of course - but I'm afraid he's being eclipsed at the moment. I find Demetri's story more interesting, anyway.)

03:16 pm - focus on what matters most
This post about different modes of fan-PTB interaction by [info - personal] serrico is interesting. I am still thinking about it.

why am I having such a hard time just sitting down to write? I like the ideas I'm having and the stories I'm working on, but I'm just not finding the focus to actually put words on paper, which is irritating to me. The words are there! I just can't be arsed to sit for more than five minutes at a time to type them.

Speaking of stories, after seeing the commercial for this week's Criminal Minds a couple of times, complete with Reid saying, "Someone drank her blood," I need someone to write the story of the BAU being called to Ilchester, MD to deal with the carnage, and Sam actually having to sit in an interrogation room and explain why exactly he killed and drank Cindy McClellan's blood. I'd like it to be from the POV of someone in the BAU and fairly unsympathetic to Sam (i.e., I don't want them to suddenly be confronted with proof the supernatural exists - I want them to walk away thinking Sam is a freakish homicidal sociopath who likes to kill women and has escalated to drinking their blood [like Dean apparently likes to skin them, wtf?], and one day, they'll lock him up).

I admit, the longer the show (SPN, I mean) goes without addressing this, the more irritated and focused on it I get. spoiler for 5.08 )

Wow, that was cheerful, huh?

***

In other news, I woke up this morning at 5:30 and was unable to get back to sleep (I went to bed around 1:30), so I got up, redid my Yuletide signup, read some fic, and went back to bed around 8 am and slept for three more hours. I feel good now, but man, what the hell is that?

I'm at the library writing a paper. I've never sat in these little love seats with the swivelly tables before! They're kind of comfy. And I can put my feet up on the little footstool! So awesome. I love the library. I'm writing a paper on how to find information about John Adams. In case, you know, anyone's as obsessive about our second president as I'm becoming.

More required reading for AOS Kirk/McCoy Enthusiasts:

Asymmetry by [info]canis_takahari.
Rated R
Summary: Leonard McCoy has already been through the dorm room politics, the awkward drunken nights, the pain and fear and grief; he didn’t expect to have to start his life over again, but Jim Kirk is making sure he does it right this time.
Sounds typical, yeah? It is so very not typical. (And when I say that I don't mean to imply that there's a shortage of amazing fics being written for this fic, because there so is not.) This is just beautifully written and poignant and funny and ... oh, guys. Also, this hits my poetry kink like a hammer on a nail.

Cowboys Lost at Sea by [info]ayalesca.
Rated NC-17, though I think that rating implies that it's all about the porn and it's really, really not.
Summary: Jim and McCoy are trapped, together and alone, in a strange world made up of their memories and desires. In a world where almost anything they want comes into existence, there is no hiding from their desires, each other, or themselves.
I don't really know what to say about this one, except that it's gorgeous and powerful and interesting and heartbreaking (but in that good way). It's just an amazingly well-told, well-constructed story, and it took my breath away.
Current Location: Golda Meir library, UWM

05:43 pm - toy cars
(very small detail, sorry!) Here in Japan, the small metal cars that children play with are called 'mini-cars' and made by Tomika. In the US, they are called matchbox cars and are made by, ah, Matchbox and Hot Wheels (I think). These are not larger toys, but the ones just the right size for a child's pocket. What are these called, and who makes them (popular brand)? Are there mini-cars for TV show vehicles (Postman Pat, Bob the Builder, etc.)? Thank you!

09:42 pm - Huh. Curious.
At least one person can't see the comments on the Baseball AU fic most of the time.

Even if you don't want to read the fic, it'd be nice if I could know if it's just her, or if there's actually a problem to report.

Fic is here. It's long, but at the moment there are a handful of comments. If you don't mind clicking, could you let me know if you can/can't see them, and if not, if there's anything unusual about your browser/viewer/whatever? If there's any common thread, I figure that's something the support folks need to know.

Quick question, guys: if you want someone to drop something he's holding - like a weapon, say - can you do it by putting pressure on his median nerve? Or the ulnar nerve, since it seems to be less protected? Assuming these two people are not significantly different in size?

10:14 pm - The Met and Fanart
I feel like I haven't been on lj for years. I have been checking in, but I can off the top of my head think of many posts that I read, wanted to comment on, but didn't get a chance to at the time and they are now lost forever.

One cool thing that I did instead of lj was going to a few exhibits at the Met--one was on paintings called American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life 1765-1915 and the other, which sort of makes a theme, was looking at the photographs of Robert Frank from The Americans. They were both really cool-some big images inside. )

08:42 pm - think we need to get this thing cleaned up
Since 14 people said they'd participate, sign-ups for Broken Toys: a Dark Angel ficathon are open.

Please read the post and comment there if you want to participate, or if you have questions.

(If anyone wants to make a pretty layout for the comm, that'd be awesome. I chose the Seattle layout for obvious reasons.)

To get in the mood, I've been rewatching the show all day, and I made a bunch of icons, as well. Given my shipping and character preferences, they are mostly Max/Alec and Alec, though there are some Max/Cindy and other stuff in there too.

A sample:

As always, comments are nice, credit's not necessary.

Now, maybe I will attempt to write something.
